Research done at the Institute of Health and Environmental Medicine in China, show the inhibitory effects D-fraction in combination with Interferon-alpha2b on the Hepatitis-B virus.

East Rutherford,NJ (Maitake Products, Inc.) Sept. 15, 2006 - Researchers at the Institute of Health and Environmental Medicine in Tianjin, China have concluded that D-fraction in combination with Interferon-alpha2b (a type of protein produced by the cells of the immune system that respond to foreign agents such as virus, bacteria, parasites and tumor cells) can synergistically provide an inhibitory effect on the Hepatitis-B virus (HBV). This same combination has shown promise in the past, in its ability to suppress the growth of prostate cancer cells.

According to this independent study, Interferon-alpha2b therapy alone has its many limitations when treating HBV. D-Fraction, a polysaccharide from the Grifola frondosa mushroom, also known as Maitake, in prior independent studies has shown its abilities in stimulating immune efficiency and used as a therapeutic adjunct in both cancer and HIV infection therapies. Now this study extends the capabilities of D-fraction, in its anti-HBV activity in conjunction with Interferon-alpha2b.

With insight such as this, the study predicts that the synergistic action of interferon-alpha2b and D-Fraction could help in the treatments of chronic Hepatitis B; further research is warranted.
