Amyloban from Lion’s Mane Mushroom Competes with Aricept® in A Study on Alzheimer’s ! |
| A recent animal study conducted at China Pharmaceutical University has indicated that a bio-active fraction, extracted from a mushroom called Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceum), competed with Aricept® (donepezil), an anti-Alzheimer’s drug marketed by Pfizer. One of the active ingredients in the fraction is a substance called amyloban, which has been found to inhibit the toxicity of the plaques of amyloid β-peptide in brain cells, a main inducer of Alzheimer type dementia. Amyloban is already patented as an anti-dementia agent in Japan (Japanese Patent #394,3399). |

| Maitake Products, Inc., East Rutherford, NJ announced that a new substance has been found in a mushroom called Lion’s Mane that inhibits the toxicity of plaques containing amyloid beta peptide (AβP) in brain cells. This agent is isolated and identified by a researcher group led by Dr. H. Kawagishi of Shizuoka University, Japan and Dr. Cun Zhuang of Maitake Products, Inc. in NJ. Memorial Sloan Kettering Confirms Immunomodulatory Effects on Maitake Extract |
| Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (“MSKCC”) has announced at the Annual Meeting of American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago May 30 - June 3, 2008, the results of a government-funded clinical study which began in 2004 and confirms the immunomodulatory effects of Maitake extracts as well as “no dose-limiting toxicity”. MSKCC also concluded that the clinical significance is unknown yet. The study was conducted on a crude extract from maitake mushroom (Grifola frondosa). MSKCC together with Cornell University Medical College published in 2004 the result of another laboratory study that showed a significant enhancement of bone marrow colony formation as well as the reduction of toxicity induced by an anti-cancer drug by the crude Maitake extract.(*) |

Tremella Mushroom Polysaccharide Studied for Potential Use in Skin Care |
| An article highlighting the significant potential value of a Tremella polysaccharide as a cosmetic ingredient for topical skin care was just recently published in Japan (Yukihiro Ohashi, et al., Fragrance Journal No.3, pp 45-50, 2005). The Tremella polysaccharide consists of mannose, xylose, and glucuronic acid linked together and shares some structural features in common with Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a common moisturizing ingredient in skin creams. However, Tremella has demonstrated in laboratory tests a much superior ability to that of HA to retain moisture and inhibit its evaporation. Tremella also does not lose its structural integrity, as does HA, when conditions of humidity are altered. |
